Bringing is Sharing. If you Bring Your Own Computer to the company you work for, you’re in fact sharing your private device ownership for the sake of the company and/or for the duration of the job. Now take a look at the figure here below with the three integration (or topology) styles that Paul Baran† evaluated when designing the Internet. And compare what these styles could bring modern organizations that are willing to open up for a potential Bring Your Own Enterprise strategy. These organizations would become smarter: not any longer based dominantly on a centralized or decentralized or distributed style but hybrid, sharing resources where possible. This would give a lot more potential to these organizations and will spread riscs and lower total and overhead costs. And because the employee Brings It’s Own concepts into the company, the many ownership problems that many large companies are facing will be largely reduced. That’s because they’ve now distributed these problems instead of centralizing them. Employees will Bring their Own Ownership. The way I envision it, the Bring Your Own Enterprise concept could potentially consist of several Building Blocks. Examples are: BYOB – Bring Your Own Brains, BYOC – Bring Your Own Communications, BYOC – Bring Your Own Computer, BYOD – Bring Your Own Data, BYOD – Bring Your Own Device, BYOI – Bring Your Own Information, BYOI – Bring Your Own Insurance, BYOK – Bring Your Own Knowledge, BYOL – Bring Your Own Leadership, BYOL – Bring Your Own Lunch, BYOM – Bring Your Own Media, BYOO – Bring Your Own Ownership, BYOP – Bring Your Own Phone, BYOR – Bring Your Own Risk Management (and Manage Your Own Risks!), BYOS – Bring Your Own Services, BYOT- Bring Your Own Tactics, BYOT – Bring Your Own Timeslice, BYOT – Bring Your Own Tools, BYOT – Bring Your Own Transportation, BYOV – Bring Your Own Vision, BYOW – Bring Your Own Wisdom, Bring Your Own … While there are still some barriers and challenges in some of these building blocks, most can be handled by redesign approaches. And in a Cafetaria model, employees could choose which building blocks they share with the company vs building blocks the company shares with it’s employees. Not all of them will be realistic, for example Bring Your Own Vision could be counterproductive to the companies vision. But to really get this thing working, organizations would have to put more trust in there “distributed” employees and rely they can and will be able to handle their own risks. And allow distributed leadership (Bring our Own Leadership) to bloom. So there it is. You are now the Fully Qualified, Allround, Self-sufficient, Empowered Employee (FQASEE) you allways wanted to be.
